Read the scenarios to identify the information you need to make a diagnosis. Do not get confused by distractors.
Take the problem at face value in the present context. You are trying to make a diagnosis, not find the underlying causes
Avoid responses with extreme/dichotomous words
Assess biopsychosocial functioning as it relates to making a diagnosis
When identifying potential stressors, do not assume. Go only with what is presented at face value. No fishing expeditions. If one is not mentioned, do not assume.
Select any applicable interventions—think of it as a menu of options — even if in real life you might be more individualized or use fewer interventions at the same time
Know the benefits and uses for each intervention and the populations for which it is NOT appropriate (i.e. group therapy for substance abuse but not for people who are in the midst of a psychotic episode or (with caution with those who have dependent or histrionic personality disorder)
Goals should relate to alleviating presenting symptoms and initially not represent long-term goals
Monitor observable improvement in the target behaviors…What are the target behaviors…what interventions are being used and for what reason…
Just like interventions… you are creating a menu of options. Realistically you would not set multiple new courses of action for someone.
If they were referred to another provider (i.e. family therapy) unless it is specifically stated that that is done, then they would continue with that.
Follow up appointments are often also a correct answer to assess the long-tail benefit and stability of the client’s progress.
