While stress in life is inevitable, many of us have excess, unnecessary stress that contributes to nervous system dysfunction (ANS dysfunction, HPA-Axis dysfunction, Sympathetic dominance, emotional dysregulation whatever you want to call it). To keep it brief… chronic or overwhelming stress in any PIECE of life (Physical, Interpersonal, Emotional, Cognitive, Environmental) can cause a cascade of “stress responses” that increase inflammation and create imbalances between the sympathetic (stress) and parasympathetic (rest, digest and repair) nervous systems.
Symptoms of nervous system dysregulation include
Physical
- Increased pain, inflammation, sleep difficulty, illness, blood sugar, blood pressure, fatigue, thyroid and gonadal hormone imbalances
Interpersonal
- Social withdrawal, reduced self esteem and self efficacy
Emotional
- Negative emotionality, anger, anxiety, grief, guilt, resentment, emotional dysregulation, apathy
Cognitive
- Increased brain fog, intrusive thoughts and ruminations as well as decreased concentration; attention, memory, planning and organization abilities.
In this book I walk people through different possible causes of unnecessary distress, encourage them to mindfully reflect on how it impacts their ability to live their rich and meaningful life and provide strategies for reducing unnecessary distress so they can allow their nervous system to heal.
