Eating Disorders and Body Image   October 2009

Many girls go on their first diet at age 8.  Although we tend to associate eating disorders with girls, they are far too prevalent among both genders.  This course will provide  information about the signs, symptoms, causes,  and prevention and intervention   techniques for children with body image and/or food issues. 

 

Disappeared, Disappointed, Disgusted: Understanding how kids deal with grief and loss  February 2010

Children experience grief and loss in a variety of ways.  Some act out.  Some withdraw.  Some feel it is their fault, while others blame the person who left/died.  This seminar explains the different ways children perceive loss at  different ages, provides age-appropriate tools to help them cope and identifies risk factors for and warning signs of complicated grief.

Maslow's Hierarchy:  Exploring the mind-body connection  March 2010

 All of our mothers told us that eating sugar before bed would keep us awake.   Although many doctors will say that is incorrect, research continues to demonstrate the  interconnectedness of emotions, thoughts, and general health.  This course  gives  caregivers multiple tools for dealing with a variety of problems.

 

Helping Children Conquer the Anxiety Monster April 2010

Young children are away from their parents for the first time, encountering new situations, trying to figure out "who they are" and constantly being bombarded with   conflicting (and many times unrealistic) messages.  This course provides 10 handy tools  to help youth conquer their anxiety and increase their self-confidence.

 

ADD/ADHD   May 2010

There are many causes of ADD-like behaviors.  Did you know that gifted children display many characteristics similar to ADD?  lthough ADD is a word that is thrown around a lot, we will explore the clinical  definition of ADD and other issues that prompt similar behaviors.  Left unattended, these behaviors can take a drastic toll on youth's self-esteem.  Finally we will discuss  interventions that can help kids succeed.

 

Cyber Safety: How to protect yourselves, your kids and your computer.    June 2010

Detective Charles Snipes (Alachua County Sheriff's Office Internet Crimes Against  Children [ICAC] Detective) will present a course that will help you ensure your digital records and communications are HIPPA compliant, discuss issues including computer security and data recovery and will finish with a 45 minute presentation on cybercrimes against children.

 

Johnny was looking at WHAT?! Dealing with sexting in the school.  July 2010

Detective Charles Snipes and Dr. Dawn-Elise Snipes team up to present  on a rapidly growing problem, sexting.  Detective Snipes will cover the legal issues of sexting from a law enforcement perspective.  Dr. Snipes will discuss the motivations behind sexting, the emotional consequences when images get redistributed and things teachers,  counselors and parents can do to protect their youth.

 

Through a Child's Eyes: The impact of domestic violence and child abuse   August 2010

Between three and ten million children witness violence in their homes each year.  10 to  20 percent of children are at risk for exposure to domestic violence (Carlson, 2000). These children have difficulty forming nurturing relationships, are at increased risk for  abuse and neglect and are more likely to develop social, emotional and behavioral  problems. Learn how to identify and intervene.
