Topics
Eating Disorders and Body Image October 2009 Many girls go on their first diet at age 8. Although we tend to associate eating disorders with girls, they are far too prevalent among both genders. This course will provide information about the signs, symptoms, causes, and prevention and intervention techniques for children with body image and/or food issues.
Disappeared, Disappointed, Disgusted: Understanding
how kids deal with grief and loss
Children
experience grief and loss in a variety of ways.
Some act out.
Some withdraw.
Some
feel it is their fault, while others blame the
person who left/died.
This seminar explains the different ways
children perceive loss at
different
ages, provides age-appropriate tools to help them
cope and identifies risk factors for and warning
signs of complicated grief.
Maslow's Hierarchy:
Exploring
the mind-body connection
All of our mothers told us that eating sugar before bed would
keep us awake.
Although many doctors will say that is
incorrect, research continues to demonstrate the
interconnectedness
of emotions, thoughts, and general health.
This course
gives caregivers multiple tools for dealing with a variety of
problems.
Helping Children Conquer the Anxiety Monster
Young
children are away from their parents for the first
time, encountering new situations, trying to figure
out "who they are" and constantly being bombarded
with
conflicting (and many times unrealistic) messages.
This course provides 10 handy tools
to help youth conquer their anxiety and
increase their self-confidence.
ADD/ADHD
There are
many causes of ADD-like behaviors.
Did you know that gifted children display
many characteristics similar to ADD?
lthough ADD is a word that is thrown around a
lot, we will explore the clinical
definition
of ADD and other issues that prompt similar
behaviors.
Left unattended, these behaviors can take a
drastic toll on youth's self-esteem.
Finally we will discuss interventions
that can help kids succeed.
Cyber Safety: How to protect yourselves, your kids
and your computer. Detective Charles Snipes (Alachua County Sheriff's Office Internet Crimes Against Children [ICAC] Detective) will present a course that will help you ensure your digital records and communications are HIPPA compliant, discuss issues including computer security and data recovery and will finish with a 45 minute presentation on cybercrimes against children.
Johnny was looking at WHAT?! Dealing with sexting in
the school.
Detective
Charles Snipes and Dr. Dawn-Elise Snipes team up to
present
on a rapidly growing problem, sexting.
Detective Snipes will cover the legal issues
of sexting from a law enforcement perspective.
Dr. Snipes will discuss the motivations
behind sexting,
the emotional consequences when images get
redistributed and things teachers,
counselors
and parents can do to protect their youth.
Through a Child's Eyes: The impact of domestic
violence and child abuse
Between
three and ten million children witness violence in
their homes each year.
10 to 20
percent of children are at risk for exposure to
domestic violence (Carlson, 2000).
These children have difficulty forming
nurturing relationships, are at increased risk for
abuse and
neglect and are more likely to develop social,
emotional and behavioral
problems.
